In a world of extreme beauty, anyone normal is ugly.

Blog #41 "Maddy & Az"

Find information and a picture about a time we weren't prepared.  Post the information and cite it.
When I think about a time when we REALLY weren't prepared as a country, I think about Sept. 11th.  There is nothing anyone can do to be prepared for a disaster as grave as this one was.  It changed the face of America.

Blog Post #40--Ruin

Describe the irony in Tally's "victory" over Dr. Cable.  What was lost in the process?

Tally found a bunch of magazines the Boss saved..and managed to keep them from Dr. Cable.  This is her "small victory."  However, Dr. Cable has already killed Boss and she finds out after the fact...a life is lost.

Blog Post #37 "In Case of Damage"

Explain what self presercation means to you?  Is it the most important thing?  Would you lie because of it?

Self preservation is doing whatever it takes to protect yourself.  Sometimes I think it could be the most important thing, but not always.  You also have to think about whoever else is in the situation with you.  I wouldn't lie out of spite to get myself out of trouble if it would hurt others in the process.

Blog Post #36--"The Rabbit Pen"

Tally had changed her mind about the Smoke and the operation, but what will she about all that now?  Whose side is she on?

I think Tally is on the Smoke side now.  She has learned what the operation and being pretty is all about and what it actually does to you.  She has connections with these people now and is worried about their safety, as well as her own.

Blog Post #35 "Invasion"

Is this the climax of the book?  Explain why or why not.

I think it's the climax of the book.  Special Circumstances obviously is on it's way.  It can only either get better or worse for Tally depending on the outcome.  It's obviously a very tension filled part of the novel.

Blog Post #34--" Burning Bridges"

Read the following quote David says to Tally.  "What you do, the way you think, makes you beautiful."  Name one person in your personal life, and one in your academic life...what makes this person beautiful?

Personal Life (Home)--I'm going to have to go with two people on this one.  My mom...she's always reassuring.  She gives me a fantastic example to live by.  She's brave, she's wise, courageous, polite and confident in herself.  She's taken life and LIVED it.  She's fought and WON the cancer battle and never once complained through it all.  She worked 12 hour days when I was a kid, again, never complained.
Also my husband...He does a lot of little things for us all.  He cooks, the majority of the time, and it's fantastic.  He always spends time with Dallas and teaches him good ways to spend his time.  His career also makes him beautiful to me.  On a daily basis, he puts his life at risk to save others...

Academic life--V2 is my soundingboard.  I know she'll be there to bounce ideas off of.  I know I can count on her for advice.  It just makes my work life so much easier to have someone to work with, to team up with.  Splitting duties, as we do, makes it easier.  She is also a friend, a confidant...and I just feel better after talking with her.

Blog Post #33--"Pretty Minds"

Respond to the following quote, what does it mean to you/to the story?  "Becoming pretty doesn't change the the way you look...it changes the way you think."  How would you want to change mentally and phyiscally if you were "pretty"?

If I were "pretty"...hmmm.
*perfect vision= no glasses/contacts
*smaller body frame...so I'd be petite and not just short
*no more WORRYING
*have some sort of math ability
*Straight hair= no blowdrying or straightening
*no wheat allergy= so I can eat like everyone else
*normal metabolic system that actually works

I will think of more and add later

Blog Post #32--"The Secret"

What does the following quote tell you about the city and society in general?  "But you do know about genetics don't you?  Sure I know all about genes.  I knew two sisters, uglies, who looked almost the same.  But parents and children?  That's just weird."

This quote tells me one of two things.  Either...A...the operation makes the pretties look entirely different from their actual gentic selves, that their children look nothing like them.  OR...B...Children possibly don't "genetically" belong to their parents.

Predict waht you think being "pretty" is.

Being pretty changes everything.  Not only does it change the way you look but the way you think.  It changes the make up of your system to where nothing is as it should be.  After the operation, it seems that all the pretties care about are parties, appearances and anything "bubbly"...whatever that means.

Blog Post #31--"Bravery"

Find an exmple of imagery, personification and a simile.  Quote directly and give page numbers.

Simile--"Without even trying, she'd shafted her best friend.  Like a walking poison, she killed everything."(p.244)
Imagery--"...the orchids glowed with pale malevolence in the moonlight, a frozen sea against the dark shore of the forest." (p. 245)
Personification--talking about the orchids "...choking the life out of other plants, out of the soil itself, selfish and unstoppable." (p. 244)

Does it require bravery to meet David's parents?  Why or why not?

Yes, it does.  Meeting the significant other's parents is an unnerving experience.  What if they don't like you?  Or, what if you don't like them?

Blog Post #30--"Suspicion"

Do you think Shay has a right to be jealous of Tally?  Why or why not?

No, I don't think Shay has a right no be jealous of Tally.  This is why I was such a tomboy as a teenager; girls are VICIOUS!  As Shay demonstrated...you get in her "territory" as Tally did with David and claws are beared.  Growing up I had a couple very close 'girlfriends' as my Grandma called it.  However, I rarely moved out of my circle because of instances just like this one.

Tally received a gift from David in the chapter that is special.  Have you ever received something that made others jealous as this gift did?  Did your gift have a speical meaning behind it as Tally's had?

I would have to say no to the jealous part, head turning maybe, but no jealousy.  Mainly because growing up my family was on a "get by status" and I never really recieved anything extravagent until adulthood.  My closest example for everyone is a gift I received for my 29th birthday.  My husband, the sweetie he is, bought me what he called a "real" wedding ring.  It's absolutely stunning in a subtle way, which is why I love it.  He said since we got married at 21 and had zero money to show for ourselves right out of college, he wanted to make a big deal out of my 29th birthday...9 years to the date after I said "yes" to his proposal.  The ring has turned a few heads, but I doubt jealousy.  I think the ACT should inspire jealousy.

Blog Post #29--"Hearththrob"

Why would it have been easier for Tally to activate the pendant when she got to the Smoke?  Explain.

Tally now has emotional connections to these people she has met in the Smoke.  She now has a tie to them.  Before she knew them, giving them up to Dr. Cable wouldn't have meant breaking hearts, changing lives and harming a community.

Blog Post #28-- "David"

If David's parents were doctors, why do you think they ran away?  Support your answer with textual evidence.

In my opinion, David's parents ran away becuase they knew the HARM the operation was causing everyone, especially since, "They reversed the operation" (218). Since they were the ones who performed it, they had a front row seat to the demons that may have occured.

Blog Post #27--"Work"

Find an image of a skyline like the one Tally sees. Post it. What is beautiful about it? Is there anything ugly about it?

I found this skyline and it reminded me of the one Tally sees in Uglies becuse of the lights.  She always mentions that she can see "the lights from New Pretty Town."  I think the skyline is beautiful.  The lights are gorgeous...the variety of lighting also caught my attention.  The refelction on the water is also something I find breathtaking.

I don't find anything about it ugly.

Blog Post #26--"The Model"

What do you think about Shay's description of a model? Shay and Tally have a skewed view of our time, but what have they got right?

This subject I could go on and on forever about, but I will try to keep it short.  I think Shay has A LOT of truth in her explaination of the model, especially when she speaks of "the disease."

Any time you open a magazine in our society (as Shay and Tally did) all you see are descriptions of body image.  Since I knew this blog topic was coming up, this weekend I made sure to thumb through a few.  On the cover of one magazine there were pictures of celeb "beach bodies"...the journalist were demeaning these women for having NORMAL bodies.  We have flaws, that's what makes us human!

I opened another one to see models on a runway for spring fashion...stick thin with legs 8 miles long.  Hardly anyone in our society looks that way.  I did some research...the average size for a women in America is 12, not the 0 or 2 models are.  At times models are 5'10" or taller weighing only 110 lbs...that's a healthy weight for someone who is FIVE feet tall, not almost SIX.

For teenage girls...they open these magazines and see these models/ celebrities who are rails, and think they have to be like that too or they're not good enough.

Coming from a background in dance and gymnastics, I've seen the lengths girls will go to to get to where they want to be.  Weekly weigh in ruined my body image as a kid...coach would say, you gained a pound, more conditioning...or you sidelined this week from the routine because you don't look as good as whomever in the leotard.  WE DON'T NEED THIS IN OUR WORLD!  So, on the one had society in Uglies may be werid, but at least those aspects aren't present.

Blog Post #25--"Lies"

Characterization of David--"David was hardly a pretty. His smile was crooked, and his forehead too high."  David is helpful and tries to explain to Tally the way of the world in the Smoke.  He wears handmade shoes and clothes and is a leader.

Picture to represent SMOKE--
I chose this picture because the technology isn't up to date and you can tell that this particular city hasn't been taken care of as it should.  The building on the left looks like it has the ability to make a lot of smoke, thus it would be cruitial to survival.

Blog Post #24--"Bug Eyes"

List the important events in Chron. order.

1.  A man puts an oxygen mask on Tally's face
2.  Tally learns about the fires and helicopters from the rangers
3.  Rangers teach Tally about the flowers.
4.  Tally reaches the bald head.
5.  She waits.

Respond to the following quote:  "...Tally was stuck out here in the wild forever.  Ugly for life.  Her only way home was to betray her friend."

Tally has a tough decision again.  She's waiting on the mountain top wondering if she should betray her friend or stay "ugly".

Blog Post #23 "Firestorm"

Give one example of each of these from the chapter: imagery, personification & simile.

Imagery--"Billowing clouds of smoke surrounded her, blotting out the sky.  A raggall of flame moved through the flowers, giving off a wave of blistering heat."  p. 172
Personification--"The fire was growing stronger.  Fingers of it shot up the hill, leaping from one beautiful flower to another, leaving them scorched and black." p. 172
Simile--"...she ran through the blackened flowers, like stabbing a poker into a slumbering fire." p. 173

Blog Post #22 "The Side You Despise"

What do you think the flying machine was?  Who was in it...make a prediction.

I think it was a helicopter full of people on a mission.

Blog Post #21 "The Worst Mistake"

Have you ever made yourself do something that you didn't wan tto do because you knew you had to?
Last school year, medically, I wasn't in the best of shape.  I knew I had to figure out what was going on.  So...a ton of doctor visits later, I figured out I had Celiac disease and need a couple of surgeries as well.  I made myself take the time for me to figure out what wrong, started a Gluten free diet, had my 2 surgeries and now I'm good to go.

Predict what you think will happen next.
I think Tally is fixing to find herself in MAJOR trouble with the roar up ahead.

Blog post #20 "SpagBol"

Invent a dry food you would ttake with you on your journey if you were Tally. What would it be and how would you make it?

Well first I have to say that I would throw all the honey roasted cashews I could find in my backpack to take along too!  I would create an egg white omelette filled with bacon, cheese and hasbrowns.  No matter what, I always love breakfast food.

Make a list of things you would miss about your home if you were forced to leave it as Tally was.

*my husband & son
*my laptop & phone
*Hank and Rascal...and maybe Sam
*Gold's Gym
*bubble baths
*clean clothes
*books!
*COFFEE
*my parents
*flip flops, and my sock monkey slippers
*bed with a fluffly blanket
*actual electricity
*the potty...camping is just not my forte unless there is a CAMPER
